MARSHLAND HISTORIES is an oral history project taking place from autumn 2024 to the spring 2025,, devised for Suffolk Wildlife Trust by Poetry People and led by writer Dean Parkin to create a series of oral history 'picture podcasts' about the Lower Waveney Valley — the people, the places and surrounding marshland from Carlton Colville to Worlingham.

On Sunday the 13th April the Marshland Histories series will be launched at Carlton Marshes Visitor Centre (11am to 4pm), previewing episodes from the series which will feature the story of Plummer's grocery shop, which was at the heart of Carlton Colville for a quarter of a century; working around the seasons with Gavin Durrant, Suffolk Wildlife Trust's Broads Reserves Warden; memories of PC Howes, the 1960s village bobby, recalled by his daughters Christine and Geraldine; a celebration of Geoffrey Dann, the much-loved woodwork teacher who spent three decades at Gisleham Middle School; a lowdown on the history of the marshes with historian Ivan Bunn; plus an all-new community poem created with Carlton Scouts.

Dean Parkin will be introducing short screenings of the Marshland Histories preview at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 2pm & 3pm and they'll also an updated exhibition of photographs, including new pictures that will illustrate the podcast series.

Do drop in to the Visitor Centre any time on Sunday — might see you there for a yarn...
